This Divertimento for Chamber Orchestra was inspired by the unique challenges and possibilities presented by the orchestra at City College of San Francisco. The ensemble was an eclectic mix of musicians: a rag-tag group with an unconventional balance of winds, brass, and a robust string section. I embraced this as an opportunity to explore the vibrant colors and distinct personalities that such instrumentation could evoke.

Movement I: Preludio
The opening movement introduces a lively and optimistic character. With a graceful melody flowing seamlessly through each section of the orchestra, it evokes a sprightly and regal atmosphere. The interplay of motifs creates an engaging dialogue, giving the ensemble a unified yet vibrant spirit.

Movement II: Hymn for Viola and Orchestra
The second movement highlights the viola, which sings with a voice-like quality that I find deeply expressive. Although there is no pre-existing hymnal material, the music carries a stately and reverent tone. The viola’s virtuosic, “noodly” passages blend warmth and flexibility, placing the instrument at the heart of the movement. As a flutist, I’ve always admired the viola’s timbre, and here it takes on an alto richness that feels deeply human.

Movement III: Scherzo "Interlude" for Cello and Orchestra
This scherzo offers an energetic interlude led by the solo cello. Its theme, entirely original, is joyfully interwoven with a playful nod to the iconic Tetris theme in the second half. Folk-like in its essence, the movement’s brisk pace and vibrant energy act as a refreshing counterpoint to the preceding hymn, injecting the work with a sense of renewal and spontaneity.

Movement IV: Meditative Processional and Spirited Finale
The final movement begins and ends with a meditative processional, once again featuring the solo cello. This key signature, one of my personal favorites, allows for the creation of complex, warm harmonies that envelop the listener. At the movement’s center lies a sprightly allegro, where the motivic solos whirl dynamically through the wind and brass sections. Originally conceived as part of another work, this movement serves as both a satisfying conclusion to the divertimento and a stand-alone piece, brimming with vitality and character.

This work was a joy to create, and I hope you find its textures, themes, and contrasts as engaging as I did while composing. I wanted to keep the finish dates of each of the movements. It shows my personal growth and progression as a composer.

If you’d like to hear a MIDI mock-up of any of the movements, feel free to reach out—I’d be delighted to share them with you!
